OLYMPIA — Washington’s WorkSource system is offering a series of employment events geared toward older workers the week of Sept. 23-27 in recognition of National Employ Older Workers Week.

The events are posted on the WorkSource calendar on go2worksource.com and can be searched for by WorkSource office or region.

Events include résumés and interviewing workshops, job clubs, hiring events and more.

“Job hunting is a skill and many older workers aren’t up to speed on the latest job-search techniques,” said Dale Peinecke, commissioner for the Employment Security Department. “WorkSource offers a friendly atmosphere where older workers can come learn about résumés, interviewing, networking, training opportunities and other tips to land a job.”

Data for Washington show workers age 55 and older represent a growing percentage of the unemployed.

In 2006, workers age 55 and older made up 11.3 percent of all unemployed workers in Washington. In 2011, it grew to 15.3 percent and climbed further to 17.4 percent in 2012.

Among unemployed Washington workers who ran out of unemployment benefits from July 2008 through June 2013, 32 percent were aged 55 and older.

By June of this year, only 26 percent of the older workers who ran out of unemployment benefits had found work in Washington. The average earnings for those re-employed a year later were roughly half of their pre-layoff wages.
