Sogno di Vino: ‘Taste, enjoy, return’

POULSBO — The dark walls of the wine cellar are a dulcet hue, like the deep, rich warmth of a red wine. The dining room walls are like a buttery chardonnay.

At Sogno di Vino, the colors are those of a Tuscan dream.

“We wanted to capture what was here — the brick, the archways — and put our Italian theme into it,” said Rob Scott, sweeping an arm toward an overhead arch while seated among rows of wine racks. Rob and his wife, Angela Scott, saw a business plan two years in the making come to fruition, and, as they opened Sogno di Vino — meaning Dream of Wine — on Wednesday.

“This is our dream, our ‘sogno,’ ” Rob said.

The Port Ludlow couple began renovating their downtown location after selling San Diego-based Luna Notte in November. They owned that eatery for 11 years. “The weather,” Rob answers jokingly, when asked why they moved to Washington. “We love seasons, and in San Diego you don’t have ’em.”

He a regional native, she from Ohio, the couple says the Northwest felt like home upon their return.

Now, they’ve expanded their space by 600 square feet, making room for a wine cellar, dining room and wine and spirits bar. Sogno di Vino, strung in wine barrels, corks and Italian scenery paintings, offers gourmet wood-fired pizza and pasta in what its owners call a “casual, yet intimate” dining experience.

Above the entrance to the Sogno di Vino kitchen, it reads “In Vino Veritas, In Pizza Amicitia:” In wine there is truth, in pizza there is friendship.

“I think people were really surprised who saw this space before and have come in to see what we’ve done. They’re just amazed,” Angela said.

She described Sogno di Vino’s menu as economically friendly, full of affordable comfort foods. Their pricing of wine, she said, is closer to that of grocery stores than specialty shops.

The restaurant focuses on using fresh, high quality ingredients, bought locally and organically when possible. Doughs, pasta sauces and desserts are all made in-house.

The wine selection is of mostly Northwest, Italian and Californian blends.

It’s a place fitted for “foodies,” Rob and Angela say.

A foodie?

“Somebody that’s into gourmet, that’s adventurous to try different sauces and ingredients and spices and dishes that are put together in a new way,” Angela said.

Sogno di Vino offers patio seating (with fire pit tables, an attraction all their own) and live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
