Shabulous offers something different from other ‘shabby chic’ stores

Shabulous owners Karen Johnson and Jeff Ogaard are doing something different among businesses in Port Orchard.

Shabulous owners Karen Johnson and Jeff Ogaard are doing something different among businesses in Port Orchard.

Johnson, who opened the store in April, said she’s trying to set her store apart from other “shabby chic” furniture stores by providing custom painting.

“Custom paint is a huge hit for my store,” said Johnson. “I am currently painting all of the new chairs for Whisky Gulch Coffee Company.”

Johnson said she has people bring furniture from home to be painted or unfinished items at her store they purchase.

“I paint them to look how they want,” she said.

Johson recently purchased a line of chalk paint called “Vignettes” made in Texas.

“We are the only store on the West Coast to carry this brand of paint. It comes in 16 colors with new colors being developed,” Johnson said.

The store will carry a full line of brushes, waxes, cleaners and other items needed to paint furniture.

Johnson will offer a beginner’s class for $35 to teach basic techniques about chalk paint in the store. Chalk paint is water based with no odor and can be applied at any temperature without any prep work.

“You can paint anything with chalk paint — fabric, wood, metal, glass,” said Johnson. “It’s easy and fun to use once you learn a few techniques.”

Johnson said about 100 people signed up for classes which begin this month. Each class will have 4 to 5 people and will run about 2-3 hours.

She added no other store in Port Orchard carries chalk paints and offers classes.

Also, the store offers “shabby chic” furniture and home decor, along with vintage, new and repurposed items.

Johnson’s children, Brian and Erika, will help out in the store.

The store offers teas, candles, soaps and gifts, including craft classes.

The store is located at 818 Bay St. Store house are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
