Going out of business

Bremerton will soon have another business causality thanks to the economy.

Bremerton will soon have another business causality thanks to the economy.

Smart Buys at Stupid Prices, located at 3451 Wheaton Way, will close sometime in October, according to Bruce Martin, one of the company’s partners.

The company is going out of business and all store locations in Washington and California will close up shop in the near future.

“It just depends on when they can cycle through the merchandise,” Martin said of the store closure dates.

Smart Buys at Stupid Prices sells name brand, high quality merchandise obtained from various sources including major retailers, department stores, retail wholesale clubs, importers and national distributors. Clearance and surplus items; discontinued merchandise; overstocks; display and floor models; customer returns; closeouts and factory overruns line the shelves at Smart Buys at Stupid Prices stores. Merchandise is typically sold at 40-70 percent off.

Martin said the economy plays a large role in the partners’ decision to shut down the company.

“The economy has killed the business after 19 years, if you can believe that,” he said. “People are so financially traumatized.”

The Bremerton location has been in business for four years, according to store assistant manager Jessica Downs.
