Vikings’ summer league team finishes third

BREMERTON — The North Kitsap girls’ basketball summer league team got three wins in one day and ended up taking third place in the Olympic College Girls Basketball Summer League Tournament last weekend.

“We were very competitive and played well,” said head coach Dan Weedin.

The Vikings lost their first game 37-33 on Friday to the Central Kitsap Mirage, then reeled off three straight wins on Saturday.

They beat Chimacum 47-25, CK Lightning 44-34, and CK Mirage 40-37 in triple overtime.

“That was a great basketball game,” said Olympic College women’s basketball coach Rick Peters. “I was impressed with North. They’ve got a lot of young talent coming up.”

Weedin said the three wins were great for the Vikings — but exhausting.

“I’m not sure how much we had left in the tank after that,” he said.

The Vikings finished third overall after a 27-24 loss to Port Townsend.

Among those who played well, Weedin said, were Jennifer Harris, Hailey Koivu, Ashley Davis, Kristen Sprague, and Katie Swanlund; KJH Cavalier Jenna Reed also made an important contribution, he said.

Other than the young Vikings’ run, there weren’t many surprises last weekend in the Bremer Student Center Gym.

The South Kitsap Wolves came out on top of the local varsity ranks as they beat Port Townsend 109 twice to win the tournament title for the second year in a row.

“We wanted to run through the tournament,” said South coach Mike Allen as his team hoisted their trophy for pictures nearby. “And defensively we did a great job.”

The Port Townsend team was kept out of the paint by the taller South players and lived on the perimeter where Stephanie Kirkendol connected on four threes for 12 of her 14 points.

The Wolves countered with 11 points from Leah Kendrich and 8 points each from Kristie Udder and Christina Bui.

For a smaller school, Port Townsend coach Al Scalf was pleased at his team’s performance especially against Narrows League-caliber talent.

“We’re just tickled pink to be here,” Scalf said.

And while South tore through the winner’s bracket, it was the North Kitsap Vikings who were in charge of the loser’s bracket.

NOTES: The Viking Junior Varsity squad kept up with the Bremerton Junior Varsity, until losing in the JV finals 44-43. The Vikings’ JV took second overall in the tournament.
