Engaged, safe students focus of CKSD’s strategy

Keeping students engaged while learning, make sure schools are safe, ensuring staff is effective, working with families and being fiscally responsible were formally listed as part of Central Kitsap School District’s strategic goals.

“We’ve really come a long way in terms of looking at a new direction for the district,” said Stacey Saunders, who was part of the effort to redevelop the new goals.

Saunders said input was taken from focus groups, the district’s ThoughtExchange online feedback program, school employees, students and parents as part of the process to draft the new goals.

CKSD board member Eric Greene said he was excited to have the statement completed.

“The input that you all have provided … has allowed us to really lay a solid foundation at the (CKSD) board and at the senior leadership level to help guide the work that’s yet to come,” Greene said.

The statement will help communicate the core CKSD vision throughout the district’s various levels, from teachers to management.

“This is going to define our business and how we do it,” Greene said.

The “mission” is described as: “to equip our students with the knowledge and skills to succeed and prosper in an ever‐changing global society.”

The “vision” is that CKSD “will be an academically strong, fiscally sound, and safe, positive learning community.”

The first goal is that all students be engaged and learning by integrating technology to enhance curriculum, encouraging collaboration, and promoting critical thinking.

The second goal is for safe schools, free of bullying and with building access monitored.

The third goal is to make sure staff was skilled and effective by recruiting excellent employees and providing professional development for them.

The fourth goal is family and community engagement by communicating clearly and by inviting community involvement in CKSD schools.

The fifth goal is fiscal responsibility by seeking out efficiency, using technology to support innovative teaching and by making long-range facilities planning decisions.
