Kingston-North Kitsap Rotary Club is planning to build a picnic shelter for Village Green Park as its next community service project.

Designees from the Village Green board and Kingston Rotary have met to discuss the amenities they would like to see in the picnic shelter. Local architect Eric Walters worked with the group on the design for the shelter.

The picnic shelter will be located to the left of the stairs, near the playground area of the park. This 24-by-36-foot shelter will be a permanent structure, and will not have to be moved once construction on the community center begins.

The shelter will have a rustic Northwest look and feature additional movable picnic tables, a fireplace, and possibly a serving counter featuring a sink and running water. Rotarians Don Hutchins, Skip Peters and Jon Sole met with Village Green board member Dave Wetter and Matt House of Precast Concrete solutions to do the initial planning.

Fundraising is being done for the permits and materials. Hopefully, the shelter will be completed for next year’s Village Green summer events. Pie in the Park, an annual August event, raised more than $12,000 at this year’s pie tasting and auction. The picnic shelter will also be used at the Cider Press every September.

Rotarians have been very generous with support to both of these events and are pleased to designate the picnic shelter as their next community service project.
