The Kitsap Audubon Society of Bremerton will host a seminar on Northwest bats presented by scientist Curt Black at the Poulsbo Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 9.

A large dormant population of bats live in Kitsap County, even in more urban areas like Bremerton, said Jack Thompson, wildlife biologist for Bremerton Animal Control.

“When we do bat jobs they usually involve 100 to 200 bats at a time and those are just the ones that I do,” Thompson said.

Black’s lecture will “challenge” local preconceptions about bats, according to the press release. It will also address the environmental impact that wind turbines have had on the bat population of Washington state and talk about habitat enhancements that Kitsap County residents can make such as the proper construction of bat houses to co-exist with their winged friends.

Thompson said that the most extensive animal control calls that he receives for bats in the county are in vacation homes, especially log cabins, that sit abandoned for most of the year.
