Peninsula Cancer Center: 1,500 patients in 4 years

POULSBO — In four years, Peninsula Cancer Center (www.peninsulacancercenter.com) has served nearly 1,500 cancer patients living on the Kitsap Peninsula and been a catalyst for multidisciplinary care.
Dr. R. Alex Hsi and Dr. Berit Madsen of Bainbridge Island were working at Virginia Mason Medical Center when they learned that almost half of all cancer patients in Kitsap left the county for care.
“It’s a financial, physical and emotional burden for patients to travel for cancer care. We wanted to help,” Madsen said.
Hsi and Madsen enlisted Dr. Heath Foxlee, a radiation oncologist based in Port Townsend; together, the three brought more than 25 years of experience in cancer care to Peninsula Cancer Center and doubled the number of radiation oncologists in Kitsap County. They also assembled a team of physicists, dosimetrists, therapists, nurses and front office staff and invested in leading-edge equipment to achieve the best possible medical outcomes.
In March, Peninsula Cancer Center was one of four facilities in Washington to receive three-year accreditation in radiation oncology from the American College of Radiology.
In addition, Peninsula Cancer Center reports receiving satisfaction ratings of “excellent” from 95 percent of patients and their families regarding the quality of care and the level of service they received.
