Schools closed as temperatures drop

UPDATE: North Kitsap schools will be closed again Wednesday for severe weather.

NORTH KITSAP — Snow and ice caused collisions on many North Kitsap roads Monday and wintry weather is expected to continue.

Schools maintained regular schedules Monday, but will be canceled Tuesday, according to a notice from the school district. Updates will be posted on the district’s website and www.schoolreport.org.

Both Kitsap County and Poulsbo Public Works departments are sanding and clearing roads, but spin-outs and collisions are slowing traffic on many North Kitsap thoroughfares.

“We’re trying to stay ahead of the game and keep a close eye on things,” Poulsbo Service Foreman Joe Walker said. . “People just need to be patient and we’ll get to their areas as soon as we can.”

Strong winds may follow the snow Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service. Sustained winds of more than 30 mph are expected in North Kitsap, with gusts up to 45 mph and a overnight low of 22 degrees.

Scattered power outages were reported in the Poulsbo area Monday afternoon.

A severe weather shelter at Poulsbo’s First Lutheran Church, 18920 4th Avenue N.E., will be open on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week.

The shelter will open from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Guests will not be able to check in after 9 p.m. Residents can dial 2-1-1 for more information.

Check back for frequent updates.
