Olympic drops opening game to Aberdeen in back-and-forth contest

The Olympic Trojans lost its opening game of the season at home against Aberdeen 27-25 in an exciting back-and-forth contest to start the year.

The Trojans previously beat the Bobcats 20-6 in the first game of the season in 2024 and finished the year with an overall 8-3 record and a 5-1 league record.

“It was our first game, you know, and there were just some mistakes and a lot we still need to work on,” Olympic coach Sal Quivetus Jr. said.

Both the Trojans and Bobcats attempted onside kicks to start the game. With 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Olympic defense let up an early touchdown on the first Aberdeen drive of the game, making the score 7-0.

The Trojans’ defense began to struggle early in the second, letting up a long touchdown pass with nine minutes remaining in the quarter and giving the Bobcats a 13-point lead after a missed extra point. The defense also struggled to contain Aberdeen’s running back Sam Schreiber, who had been running for long gains from the very beginning of the game.

Olympic running back Chace Webster began to get his running legs going shortly after the Bobcat score, rattling off consecutive 10-plus yard runs to get the Trojans back into field goal range.

Trojan quarterback Toby Moore threw the ball to a wide-open wide receiver in Mario Casillas on a go route, giving Olympic its first score of the game, making the score 13-6 Bobcats with 5:13 remaining in the half.

The Trojan defense came up with a fumble two minutes before halftime, and Olympic drove down the field and scored another touchdown. The Trojans could not convert the two-point conversion, so they trailed 13-12 at halftime.

“We got to a point, you know, where it was they score, we score, they score, we score,” Quivetus Jr. said. “I mean, we did a great job of getting back in the game after being down two touchdowns.”

Olympic came out of the halftime break with the ball first, driving down the field to score a touchdown on the opening drive of the half.

Nonetheless, Aberdeen also scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the half, keeping their foot on the gas pedal and increasing its lead to 21-18. The Trojans got the ball back with five minutes remaining in the third quarter and drove down the field, imposing its will on the Aberdeen defense through multiple Webster carries, capping off another Olympic scoring drive.

The Trojans began driving down the field after another Bobcat score, but Moore threw his first interception of the season on an out route with 2:09 remaining in the game. The interception was returned to the Trojans’ 14-yard line, giving the Bobcats an opportunity to put the game away. Olympic managed to hold Aberdeen, giving them one more chance to win the game.

Moore attempted a long ball to Casillas on third down, but couldn’t connect. The next play, he threw another interception, sealing the win for the Bobcats.

“It is a tough loss, we don’t like to lose at home,” Webster said. “We’re just going to get back on the field…and just fix our mistakes and work on our run defense.”
