Motorcyclist dies

A 45-year-old Hansville man died early June 22 after crashing his motorcycle into a cable barrier on Highway 3.

Michael Sooto was traveling northbound on Highway 3 just south of Finn Hill Road at a high rate of speed before his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a cable barrier, a Washington State Patrol news release states. He died at the scene.

WSP lists the cause of the crash as speeding too fast for conditions.

Rolfes sworn in

After 16 years in the state legislature, Sen. Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island) officially announced June 20 she is stepping down from the Senate after submitting a resignation letter to Gov. Jay Inslee.

Her announcement came the same day she was sworn in as a Kitsap County commissioner after being appointed last month. Her resignation from the Senate is effective Aug. 15. Rolfes’ four-year Senate term that began in January 2021 will be filled by a temporary appointee, who will serve through the 2024 election. The appointee will be chosen by the county commissioners from a list of three names submitted by the district’s precinct committee officers.

Horse program benefit

The annual fundraising concert for the Native Horsemanship Youth Program will be July 29 at 2 p.m. at 21487 Orca Drive NE in Poulsbo.

The afternoon will feature prize-winning singer-songwriter Wil Maring, recording artist Lynne Ferguson, flat pick guitar champion Roger Ferguson, professional vocalist-guitarist Kristen Ferguson and composer-musician Max Sigo-Dawes. There will be demonstrations of unique native horsemanship techniques as well as a raffle, silent auction and home-baked treats.

The nonprofit has operated on the Port Madison Indian Reservation for 35 years. Its mission is to preserve and teach traditional (Comanche/Numunu) horsemanship. The NHYP was developed to serve low-income and special-needs youth, but all are welcome.

Classes are free with donations accepted from those who are able to pay. NHYP is supported by music performances and sales, grants and private donations.

The Poulsbo Fire Department has a vacancy for commissioner Position 2.

When an appointment is made, the person will fill the term through its end in 2024. The election for the spot will be in November of 2024. Applicants must be registered voters in the fire district.
