The North Kitsap girls soccer team was shut out 2-0 in a critical Olympic League match at home against Port Angeles Oct. 16.

The Roughriders (10-3, 8-3 in OL) are now one game behind the second-place Vikings (10-3, 9-2) with the playoffs right around the corner. NK previously beat PA on the road 1-0 Sept. 27.

“I like having strong competition in the league because it prepares us for postseason, which is what our program is always planned for,” NK coach Travis Rider said.

The Vikings managed to control possession of the ball after the first ten minutes of the match, not letting PA get the ball over to the NK side of the field.

The defense from both sides proved to be strong, with neither squad even able to generate another shot on goal for 20 consecutive minutes. Viking Olivia Basco-Yu managed to keep the ball in NK territory and inhibit PA attackers from breaching the other side of the field. She eventually managed to get the second shot on goal of the match for either squad, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Roughriders were able to score the first goal of the game with 3:30 remaining in the first half, giving them a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

“I think we got pretty frazzled once we got into their defensive line, just because they stepped pretty quickly throughout the game,” Basco-Yu said.

PA quickly got on the board again with another goal with 34 minutes remaining in the second half, extending the Roughriders’ lead to 2-0.

Viking Juliette Samnes managed to land a shot on goal, showcasing a more aggressive approach to their offense in the second half, but couldn’t convert.

The Vikings were able to get the ball back into PA territory, landing a corner kick that eventually led to a shot on goal from Syleena Hogan. However, the shot didn’t find the back of the net, leaving the Vikings scoreless with less than ten minutes remaining in the match.

“We need to just move the ball quicker,” Rider said. “We just got to get the ball, release the ball.”
