Truck driver dies, Highway 104 partially closed

PORT LUDLOW — State Highway 104 west of the Hood Canal bridge remained partially closed at 2 p.m. July 21, after a morning tractor-trailer wreck killed the truck’s driver, according to State Patrol.

Long traffic lines remained into the afternoon, as State Patrol troopers and state Department of Transportation personnel investigate the wreck and manage traffic around the scene.

The single-vehicle wreck happened at about 8:30 a.m., about two miles west of the Hood Canal bridge on the westbound side of the highway.

State Patrol had not yet released the name of the driver pending notification of family.

A witness to the crash stated he saw the truck swerve just before it hit the guardrail and crashed into several trees before coming to a stop, said Keppie Kepplinger, spokeswoman for East Jefferson Fire and Rescue.

Medics from Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue, East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Quilcene Fire Department and Naval Magazine Station 91 responded to the scene and performed CPR on the driver for almost an hour, Kepplinger said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 9:14 a.m., she said.
