When the Bremerton School District closed Bremerton Junior High School in early 2007, students from the Frances Haddon Morgan Center were left without a place to go, but on Friday morning, the district unveiled a sparkling new learning facility at Bremerton High School made just for them.
The portable building near the tennis courts at BHS was the culmination of 18 months of work by the district, the Office of the Superintendent for Public Instruction, the Department of Social and Health Services and all those who work with students with disabilities.
“This shows that these students are important enough for us to put our differences away and use our resources to serve these children,” BSD Director of Special Education Bob Hamilton said.
Hamilton credited BSD Superintendent Bette Hyde with working hard to ensure that the project came to completion, because she views special education “as a calling.”
As a result of all of the combined efforts it took to make the new classroom a reality, Hyde said the real gift is “the partnerships we have formed here.”
Frances Haddon Morgan Superintendent Carol Kirk said the new classroom was one of those things that “we needed it to happen,” and she was pleased to see the final result of the collaborative efforts of all involved.
