Kingston Heritage Day Sept. 27 is a chance for the community to share stories about the history of town, the folks who’ve passed through and passed on, take in old photos and farm implements, race in gunny sacks, nibble on cobblers and cake and cut the rug to old-timey tunes. Everyone is welcome to dress up in ‘period’ costumes – “you pick the period!”
The day starts out with a hearty Loggers’ Breakfast at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club from 8-11 a.m. while the Kingston Farmers Market opens down at Mike Wallace Park with its first ever Apple Fest.
Come down to the market between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to pick up a bounty of fall produce, check out vintage farm and kitchen implements and try a hand at pressing cider. Desserts made from all kinds of apples will be served – from cobblers, crisps and crunches to pies and brown betty. There will also be a raffle for a basket of vendor wares and old-timey Americana entertainment with Cort Armstrong and Friends.
As the market is wrapping up, the Home Town Band performs at Mike Wallace Park 1-2:30 p.m.
Covered wagon shuttles provide transportation 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. between the marina and other ongoing events, turning around at Kingston Thriftway shopping center.
The Kingston Historical Society will have displays and its members on hand to talk about the heritage of Kingston and share stories at both the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center and Cleo’s Landing Learning Center for the Arts, located at the corner of West Kingston Road and Highway 104.
Just up the road, antique cars and tractor will be on display in front of the now-vacant building next to Country Pet Shoppe on Highway 104. Across the street, kids can get a taste of growing up a century ago by taking part in old-fashioned games and contests at Kola Kole Park from 1-4 p.m.
The day wraps up with a Saturday Night in Town from 6-9 p.m. at the Kingston Community Center with dancing to the White Potato Band, a dessert potluck (bring something sweet to share), beer, wine and a chance to break out the seersucker and skirts.

The Kingston Historical Society is working to archive photos and artifacts of local historical interest, whether generations old or recent. Bring photos and memories to share with the society at Heritage Day. The society is now able to record stories with a new audio recorder, which allows CDs to be made from recordings for library or other use. Membership in the historical society is a great opportunity to learn about and preserve Kingston’s legacy. The society meets at 10 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of the month downstairs in the Kingston Community Center. All are welcome. The Oct. 28 meeting will be the last of 2008.
