No omelets on the menu

POULSBO — It’s set for a grand opening next month, but there’s one community niche Taprock Northwest Grill won’t be filling as a replacement for Mitzel’s American Kitchen, which was destroyed in a May 2006 fire.

That niche? Breakfast, with a side order of conversation.

Despite its vacation lodge appeal and mouthwatering menu, many community members are already expressing disappointment Taprock isn’t catering to those up for eggs and issues.

Taprock marketing manager Jill King said after the loss of Mitzel’s, Elmer’s Restaurants Inc., which owns both the Mitzel’s chain and Taprock, decided it was an opportunity to try something new for the Poulsbo community.

“This is a completely different concept,” she said, adding the chance to create a new kind of amenity for Poulsbo was the silver lining in the cloud of Mitzel’s destruction.

But while they’re planning for only lunch and dinner now, the restaurant will still remain open-minded to the wants of its patrons.

“We have said that in order to do the best job possible for our guests we want to perfect lunch and dinner before we serve breakfast,” she said.

But should people express a desire for that Taprock morning meal, their opinions will be heard, she said.

“We’ll definitely take it to heart,” she said.

So while breakfast isn’t on the table now, it hasn’t been canned completely. It may just be up to the community to save it.
