Let’s go fly a kite

The Downtown Kingston Association kicks off its first event of the year with families looking to dust off old kites or make new ones.

The event, Kites Over Kingston, scheduled for March 29 at Mike Wallace Park at the Port of Kingston, brings a new reason to look skyward and hope for sunny weather in early spring.

To kick off the free event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the first 40 kids who arrive receive free kite-making kits.

Nancy Martin, coordinator for the event, said kids are encouraged to dress up and prizes are awarded to kids wearing the best costumes.

In addition to the kite making activities, kids can show off their kites during a kite and costume parade. Bruce Cosacchi, Bruce Simpson and Rex Rice of the Foggy Rivers Jazz Band are set to entertain the crowd with live music.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” Martin said. “Our goal is to bring people downtown Kingston and to have fun.”

In the event of inclement weather, the kite flying will commence the following Saturday on April 5.
