E-cigarette causes hotel fire over holiday weekend

The fire, which started around 10 p.m., caused about $3,500 of damage, according to Jeff Prichard, deputy fire marshal with the Bremerton Fire Department.

BREMERTON — Oyster Bay Inn suffered fire damage from an overcharged e-cigarette Nov. 28.

The fire, which started around 10 p.m., caused about $3,500 of damage, according to Jeff Prichard, deputy fire marshal with the Bremerton Fire Department.

Prichard said that when lithium-ion batteries, like those in the e-cigarette, start overcharging, “they can overheat and start causing thermal runaway.” He said they’ll then start venting, which can cause fire.

In this case, the fire set clothing and a duffel bag ablaze, and then extended to the wall, chair and desk, but the damage was limited to only one unit in the inn.

“The room’s basically going to have to be gutted and rebuilt,” Prichard said. “The walls are okay, but they’ll have smoke damage.”

Prichard said the smoke alarm in the room went off, and after smoke got into the hallway, the smoke detector went off. This meant fire crews were sent on a commercial fire alarm code.

“Before midnight, everybody was back in their room,” Prichard said.
