Manchester Library Salmon Bake on June 18

MANCHESTER — The Friends of Manchester Library will have its annual salmon bake and book sale on Sunday, June 18 to raise money for the library’s maintenance fund.

The Father’s Day event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 11 years old. Children 5 and younger are $5.

As in years past, the event will be in the parking lot of the Manchester Library, at 8067 E. Main St., Manchester.

The menu this year will include open pit barbecued wild salmon, hearty baked beans, coleslaw, garlic bread, a beverage and a cookie. The Friends organization said it hopes to serve more than 750 dinners this year. Special guest food servers include local politicians, state elected officials and Kitsap Regional Library staff members. Also, as in past years, the local Bow family will gather in Manchester to build the alder fire and bake the salmon.

The concurrent book sale will offer a wide selection of vintage and recent reading material for all interest groups, including a variety of children’s books, fiction, nonfiction, special interest and video materials.

The Friends of the Manchester Library non-profit organization owns and operates the Manchester Library building, partnering with Kitsap Regional Library, which provides staff, systems and books for the site. The Port of Manchester leases the land to the organization for $1 a year and the Long Lake Garden Club, which created the landscaping, also maintains it. The Friends organization funds the maintenance of the building, makes capital improvements and pays the utilities and insurance.

The Friends organization is funded solely by fundraising efforts and donations. This year, the organization’s budget to operate and maintain the building, along with supporting some special library programs, is approximately $30,000. The Salmon Bake and Book Sale event is the major fundraising effort, covering about one-third of the group’s budget.
