Wrestling: South Kitsap pins defeat on Bellarmine

Bellarmine Prep’s wrestling newsletter is dubbed the “Takedown Times.” But it was the Wolves, not the Lions, who were doing the pinning. South Kitsap won 12 of 14 matches to capture its 152nd consecutive Narrows League win, 67-9, Tuesday night in Tacoma. Among the Wolves’ dozen wins, 10 were pins.

Bellarmine Prep’s wrestling newsletter is dubbed the “Takedown Times.”

But it was the Wolves, not the Lions, who were doing the pinning.

South Kitsap won 12 of 14 matches to capture its 152nd consecutive Narrows League win, 67-9, Tuesday night in Tacoma.

Among the Wolves’ dozen wins, 10 were pins.

“I thought we looked sharp,” South coach Chad Nass said. “We had some young guys who looked really good.”

Since the Wolves won their season opener last week against Gig Harbor, Nass has mixed up the lineup. A pair of sophomores, Kris Fenton and Jens Johnson, and junior Hakeem Smith made their varsity debuts.

Fenton claimed a 9-1 decision at 135 pounds against Shawn Krendl. Smith pinned Givanni Natalizio in 1 minute, 34 seconds at 145, while Johnson did the same to John Forbes in 2:58 at 160.

Nass said he thought the trio did “extremely well.”

Nass said a combination of factors spurred the changes. He allows his wrestlers to challenge for the top spot in their weight classes in each practice.

That resulted in Terrill Wilson, a transfer from Kansas, beating out Joel Miner, who advanced to last season’s Mat Classic, at 112 before the season. He said some wrestlers, such as Wilson, became certified at new weight classes.

Per Washington Interscholastic Activities Assocation regulations, each wrestler must have a state-approved assessor establish their minimum weight before they can compete.

Nass said everyone on the team was certified before the season.

While Wilson’s lowest certified weight was 103, he had to follow a progression plan to get to that point. Against Gig Harbor, he wrestled at 112. Nass said Wilson looked “sharp“ at 103 against Levin Parimeter, whom he pinned in 1:58.

Tom Decker was one of the few Wolves who didn’t win. The junior lost a decision against Jeff King, 10-4, but Nass noted that the Bellarmine Prep wrestler advanced to last season’s Mat Classic.

“He wrestled him well,” Nass said. “That’s a close match in the heavyweight division.”

Miner regained his varsity spot at 112 and pinned David Ladenburg in 2:58.

Two other Wolves who advanced to state last season, Adam Ferguson (130) and Simon Kipperberg (119), also pinned their opponents. Sophomore Michael Neiner rebounded from a loss against Gig Harbor to pin Addison Grisaffi in 2:58.

Nass noted he was impressed with the win because Grisaffi is the son of Bellarmine Prep coach David Grisaffi.

“Every guy I wrestle, I’m going to have to make sure they don’t want to wrestle me again,” said Neiner, who is 5 foot 7. “I’m not the tallest guy out there.”

South won its first nine matches before the Lions’ Jeff Bohren pinned Chris Johnson in 2:39 at 215.

The Wolves’ last shutout was Jan. 18, 2007, when they defeated Bellarmine Prep 80-0.
