The South Kitsap High School fastpitch team followed a 3-0 defeat to Kentlake with a 13-3 loss to Rogers to end its season Saturday in the West Central District Tournament at Sprinker Recreation Center in Spanaway.
“It was just our luck that we got both No. 1 teams from the SPSL,” South coach Kathy Ballew said. “It just wasn’t our time, I guess.”
South (8-10) couldn’t find a way to hit Kentlake starter Caitlyn Duggan, but took a 2-0 lead in the second inning against the Rams.
“We got to their pitcher,” Ballew said. “There just wasn’t enough firepower.”
Shortstop Ally Johnson, third baseman Kirstie Cosgrose and catcher Trish Temper singled in order to start the second.
With one out, Heather True hit into a fielder’s choice, but the catcher threw the ball away down the right-field line and two runs scored.
It was the only time the Wolves led as Rogers responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Haylie Watson started the inning with a single and Kaila Ulufale followed with an RBI double.
After Mckinzy Nhsinec popped out, the Rams produced five consecutive hits off South starter Samantha Jacobs.
Devin Larson hit an RBI single and Meagan Lee followed with a double. Jessica Brock then singled to score Larson and she crossed home on a single by Olivie Toma.
Bobbie-jo Schaapveld hit the Rams’ third consecutive single and scored along with Toma two batters later on a double by Watson.
“I wanted to stop the momentum,“ said Ballew, referring to the pitching change. “They obviously were hitting her and they’re a good-hitting team.”
Felitia Buss came in relief and only allowed one run until the sixth.
That came in the fifth when Nhsinec scored on a single by Lee. The Wolves responded in the sixth when Cosgrove singled to score Monique Morey, cutting their deficit to 8-3.
But South’s season came to an end in the bottom of the sixth when the Rams scored five runs to put the 10-run rule into effect. Schaapveld, Nicole Morrow and Watson opened the inning with singles before Buss got consecutive hitters to pop out.
An error at first base that could’ve ended the inning instead allowed a run to score and Lee followed with a three-RBI single to right field. Lee scored two batters later on an error to end the game.
“We fell apart with some errors,” Ballew said. “My next pitcher really gave up a hit here and there, but we could’ve been out of innings if the defense was protecting her.”
