YELM — There was no scoreboard watching. No waiting patiently for score updates on the bus ride home.

South Kitsap took care of that with a 4-1 win during its regular-season finale Tuesday night in a Class 4A Narrows League girls soccer match.

The Wolves (9-3-3 overall, 6-3-3 league) clinched third place in league with the victory and will play Kentridge at 10 a.m. Saturday in the West Central District Tournament at Art Crate Field. South would have clinched the league’s No. 3 seed even with a loss because it owned the tiebreaker with Bellarmine Prep, which suffered a 1-0 setback late Tuesday against Gig Harbor.

It will mark just the second time the Wolves have played a team outside of the Narrows. Their only match against a team not from 4A or 3A Narrows came during their 3-2 season-opening win Sept. 4 against North Kitsap, which competes in the Olympic League.

South has had mixed results against the South Puget Sound League during Cain’s four seasons. In 2009, the Wolves defeated Auburn Riverside, 1-0, during districts, but lost against Kentwood in the state quarterfinals. They also were eliminated by Kentwood in a shootout the following year. Last season, South advanced to state when it defeated Skyview from the 4A Greater Saint Helens League at districts.

“Once you get to the playoffs and play an SPSL team, it’s going to be a battle,” South coach Julie Cain said. “Anything can happen.”

The Wolves closed the regular season with wins in six of their last eight matches. They outscored their opponents 33-7 during that span.

“I think we’ve turned it around,” said Cain, referring to the team’s scoring woes during the first half of the season.

South had little difficulty securing a win against the Tornados (1-14-1, 0-12-0). Senior midfielder Miranda Caballero, who missed the Wolves’ 2-1 loss Thursday at Gig Harbor while on a recruiting trip at Middle Tennessee State University, where she committed to play next season, scored goals in the 10^th and 27^th minutes.

“It was great to have her back,” Cain said. “We missed her.”

The final two South goals in the 43^rd and 66th were sandwiched by an own goal during the previous minute. Sophomore Adri Jackson scored both of them.

“We wanted to play everyone,” said Cain, referring to the own goal. “We mixed the positions up a bit.”
