POULSBO — The one opponent that wasn’t slated to compete at the Viking Challenge is the one that came up victorious. Mother Nature forced an early end to the meet Saturday at North Kitsap after just two rounds, said North Kitsap Coach Jon Cooke.
“We went two rounds, which was a round and a half shorter than what we wanted to do,” Cooke said.
He wasn’t disappointed with the overall results, but did say that his team’s youth showed. Only a handful of his wrestlers are returning seniors.
Among those making her wrestling debuts at the Viking Challenge was Katie Plowman, who is perhaps better known as Bill Plowman’s little sister. Viking fans remember Bill Plowman as one of the state contenders last year.
After 11 years of taking gymnastics classes and watching her brother wrestle, Katie Plowman, a sophomore, decided it was her turn.
“I always went to the meets, and I wanted to get out on the mat,” she said.
She lost both matches in the tournament, but it won’t affect her preseason goal. Cooke wasn’t disappointed.
“I hope at the end of the season I can say that I made it to the girls’ state,” she said.
“We wrestled two matches and lost both of them. This is an early tournament, we will be excited to get everyone with enough practices and in their correct order so we will compete better,” Cooke said. “Olympic is really strong this year, but both matches would be much closer a month from now.”
