Tough, physical match results in scoreless draw for SK

The Wolves were unable to capture a win in a critical game on senior night Oct. 23, as South Kitsap tied with Rogers (Puyallup) 0-0.

The result puts SK at 8-5-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the South Puget Sound League, sitting in third place. The Rams are now 7-5-3 overall, and 6-2-2 in the SPSL. The Wolves entered the matchup on a four-game winning streak, with their last loss coming against Puyallup 2-1 Oct. 7.

“The energy was high because of all the senior night stuff,” SK wing/midfielder Sylvi Allen said. “So we came out of the gate really strong, and we pressed hard.”

Neither team could get much of anything going for the first ten minutes of the first half.

SK wing Kylee Hamilton-Nation managed to get the first shot on goal of the game for either squad with 25 minutes remaining, but couldn’t get the ball to find the back of the net. Allen followed that up with another shot on goal attempt five minutes later, but once again could not get the ball past the Rogers goalkeeper.

Nonetheless, SK controlled the ball for the majority of the first half, with Rogers unable to generate a shot on goal of their own. The game remained scoreless despite another shot on goal attempt from Allen with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half, largely due to the physical nature of the game itself.

“We were kind of expecting it based on our results last year [against Rogers],” Allen said. “I think we matched their physicality pretty well.”

The Wolves came out of the second half with more aggression, double-teaming Rams and driving the ball into Rogers territory, staying on course with the first half. SK Wing Chloe Legan had a shot on goal attempt with 25 minutes remaining in the second half, but couldn’t convert.

Allen managed to generate another one-on-one opportunity, but couldn’t convert. But the Wolves continued to control the attack, not letting the Rams get any opportunities of their own.

“I mean, we worked really hard tonight,” SK coach Randi Gunyan said. “We came out hard, played intense, but couldn’t pull out the win.”
