Strong start to North Kitsap’s football season

Vikings beat Bainbridge 28-0 Sept. 4, and face W F West at home on Sept. 11.

The North Kitsap Vikings beat Bainbridge 28-0 on Sept. 4. With the first game of the season under their belts, the team is preparing for the home opener against W F West on Sept. 11.

“[W F West] is a little bigger than Bainbridge was,” said head coach Jeff Weible. “We’ll have to block better upfront and continue working each game, play by play, to bring the offense along slowly.”

Although Coach Weible grades the offense as “C-minus at best,” the Vikings scored four touchdowns against Bainbridge, all in the first half.

Senior captain Sean Crowell was the first to put points on the board when he caught a pass out wide from junior quarterback Chris Andrews and ran through several members of the defense in to the end zone. Later in the first quarter, senior Leif Klinger intercepted a pass from Bainbridge to run the ball back for a touchdown. The Vikings ended the first quarter up 14-0.

In the second quarter, North Kitsap put up two more touchdowns to stretch the lead to 28-0, where it remained the rest of the game. Sophomore Dax Solis took the handoff from Andrews  to run up the sideline and score. Then, right before half, senior Kole Milyard caught a long pass that was lofted over the Bainbridge defense.

The Vikings defense stood strong for the rest of the game, even with its lack of experience.

“I thought our defense looked really good, and we kind of expected that,” Weible said. “We have a lot of players back and some that we picked up, kids that played pretty well.”

Where the defensive line was full of returners, the offensive line was new.

“Our one returning O-lineman was out, but he’ll be back this week,” Weible said.

Weible said that in terms of Week 1, he and the coaching staff were pretty pleased.

Now, on to Week 2.

W F West also won their first game, beating Kingston 14-3.

“It’s a different team with a different offense and what they do,” Weible said. “We just need to continue with what we do on defense and make adjustments to whatever they do.”

Last season, North Kitsap beat W F West 28-7 on their way to claiming the league title and making a run in to the playoffs. Kick off is at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at North Kitsap.
