Stingers youth baseball tryouts

The Stingers Baseball Club is hosting tryouts for the 2010 season Aug. 3, 5, 7 and 10 for 11U, 12U, 14U and 16U levels. Tryouts are at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The search is on for all position players for an exciting upcoming season on all teams. Players must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during tryouts. Please bring a copy of player’s certified birth certificate. For additional information, call (360) 871-0734.

Fourth annual Race for Literacy

The race is at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15 at View Ridge Elementary, 3250 Spruce Rd. behind the Sylvan Way Library and post office.

There are three races — a five-kilometer, one-mile and kids dash — and medallions, certificates and ribbons will be presented to participants.

Special events include book signings by authors Gregg Olsen, Elinor DeWire and Jenny Shortridge.

The Literacy Council aims to help those 16 years and older build skills as they enter the work force. Programs include individualized GED preparation, job-specific literacy tutoring, ESL tutoring, citizenship preparation, family literacy tutoring for parents and work in reading and other basic skills.
