SPORTS BRIEFS | South Kitsap graduate earns recognition

Davis has been named to the first-team defense on the 2014 D2Football.com Preseason All-America Team

Junior cornerback Isaiah Davis has been named to the first-team defense on the 2014 D2Football.com Preseason All-America Team.

“I felt honored to be mentioned in that elite category,” Davis told wildcatsports.com.

The 5-foot-10, 186-pound Davis, a 2011 South Kitsap graduate, earned the recognition after two standout seasons for the Wildcats.

As a redshirt freshman, Davis started seven games, finishing third in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) in passes defended. He also was eighth in punt returns and 10th in kick returns, earning second team all-GNAC honors.

Last season, Davis was a fixture in the CWU secondary, starting all 11 games and leading the conference with six interceptions. He also was the GNAC’s top punt returner, averaging 13 yards per return, and was fourth in kick returns (24.9). He was named to the all-GNAC first team as a defensive back and second team as a punt returner.

“Isaiah’s a great player and, over time, he’s shown that to be the case,” first-year CWU head football coach Ian Shoemaker said.
