VanWyck finds tough competition at state

Kingston’s Dana VanWyck faced some tough competition at the state gymnastics tournament in Tacoma last week.

VanWyck finished in the bottom half on floor, vault and uneven bars during her first trip to the tourney. Even so, Kingston gymnastics coach Sheila Moore was pleased with the improvements VanWyck has made.

“She improved all season,” said Moore, “and I think she will make it to state on every event next year.”

Wins elude (most) local wrestlers

Wrestlers from both Kingston and North Kitsap high schools had a tough time at the Mat Classic last week. Only Kingston’s Kiana Witt took home a piece of hardware as she won the state title in the 112-lb girls division.

Kingston’s Alex Lambert (119) and Travis Schriner (189) were ousted with two early losses each, despite Schriner’s 11-2 victory against Michael Reyes (Qui).

North’s Justin Swansboro (152), Emilie Poffenroth (119) and Megan Evans (125) each also lost two matches early on, to keep them out of the finals.

Kingston swimmers 16th at state

The Kingston High School 400 freestyle relay team finished sixteenth at the state swim tournament Feb. 20. The team was a long shot going into the tourney. Despite their last place finish, the swimmers turned in a time of 4:23:39, which was five seconds quicker than their best time at districts.
