SPORTS BRIEF | Villwock disqualified at Seafair

South Kitsap graduate’s Beacon Plumbing hydroplane struck Jimmy Shane’s hull during Saturday’s heat

Dave Villwock did not have an opportunity to earn his first win since 2009 at Seafair.

The veteran driver and 1972 South Kitsap graduate was suspended by H1 officials after his Beacon Plumbing boat struck Jimmy Shane’s Oberto hull during a heat Saturday.

“I had cut inside the course to pick up my timing marks for the start, established my arc and all of a sudden, didn’t even see it, didn’t know what it was bam,” Shane told KIRO-TV. “I turned around and looked back and all I saw was a yellow boat.”

That followed a pair of incidents during the previous week in the Tri-Cities, where Villwock raced for the first time since his Spirit of Qatar boat caught fire in January 2013 in Doha, Qatar.

Villwock’s last win came when he captured his fifth consecutive Gold Cup in July 2012 along the Detroit River.
