Bainbridge tallied the most runs they’ve scored in a game this season, and it all happened in the first inning, as the Spartans cruised to a 15-1 home win over Bremerton April 15.
The Spartans are still undefeated in league play at 6-0 and 8-3 overall, right on the heels of first-place North Kitsap. The Knights have yet to win a league game this season.
“We’re just really trying to keep that going,” Spartan shortstop Duncan Bos said, who had 3 RBIs on the day.
Bainbridge starting pitcher Braden French made quick work of the Bremerton lineup, forcing two groundouts and earning a strikeout.
Meanwhile, Bainbridge put together its monster first inning by scoring 15 runs on eight hits and forcing an early Knight pitching change from Ryder Sorensen to Luke Kilmer two-thirds of the way through the inning.
Bos kicked off the scoring for the Spartans with an RBI triple to right field, followed by first-baseman Will Rohrbacher hitting an RBI single to right field. Many of the runs scored in the bottom of the first resulted from fielding errors by the Knights.
“Our first few batters got on [and] it really set the tone,” Bos said. “After that, everyone just had a lot of energy and [we] just kept the momentum going for the rest of the night.”
The Bremerton pitching improved in the top of the second inning with Kilmer starting the inning, forcing two fly outs and a strikeout. Nonetheless, the Knights could not get their offense going.
Sorensen managed to get the first hit of the day for Bremerton in the top of the fourth. He later gave the Knights their only run of the game off a Noah Weisberth single.
The game ended after five innings due to the mercy rule.
“The errors killed us,” Bremerton coach Rob Ells said. “We’ve got to get the bat on the ball a little more.”
