Spartans closing in on league title with win over Kingston

The Bainbridge Spartans girls soccer team kept things rolling with another shutout victory on the road against Kingston Oct. 21, easily winning 6-0.

Bainbridge (12-1, 12-0 in Olympic League) previously beat Kingston (6-7, 6-6 in OL) 4-1 Sept. 25 at home.

“We have a lot of respect for Kingston,” Bainbridge coach Katie Drovdahl said.”They definitely didn’t make it easy, which is good because you want that challenge.”

The Spartans got off to a fast start with an immediate goal from midfielder Magda Rufo-Hill, giving Bainbridge a 1-0 lead within the first two minutes of play.

Bainbridge sophomore Emaline Delecki followed that up with another goal not even ten minutes later, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead within the first 30 minutes of the first half.

Buccaneer forward Christina Prescott, along with some other Bucs, forced Spartan turnovers over the midfield, but still struggled to get the ball consistently on the Bainbridge side of the field. Kingston midfielder Daniella Najar pushed the ball into Spartan territory after a long battle over the middle of the field, but was later called for being offside, giving Bainbridge the ball once again.

“In the first half, we were forcing the ball in the middle, and we have a lot of speed on our wings,” Drovdahl said. “We were trying to keep those wingers a little bit wider to create more space.”

The Spartans managed to add to their goal total with another score from Rufo-Hill, giving Bainbridge a three-goal lead with 30 minutes remaining in the game.

Nonetheless, the Kingston defense tightened up after the goal, keeping the ball away from Bainbridge for the next ten minutes until Spartan defender Inez Gerbeck managed to put a goal in for Bainbridge, giving them a 4-0 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining in the game.

The Bainbridge offense played strongly until the end, with defender Abril Edwards and forward Siri Smith adding two additional goals.

“We were trying to lock them down in the middle of the field,” Kingston coach Mike Fleck said. “I think in the first half we did and then the second half, we just got beat up.”
