South Kitsap divers help dunk Central Kitsap

The preseason talk surrounding the South Kitsap girls swimming team centered around its talented youth.

But in Thursday’s Narrows League home meet against Central Kitsap, it was all about the seniors — at least in the diving portion.

The Wolves claimed the top three spots in the event en route a 88-78 win against Central that improved their record to 4-0. Senior Amanda Bryan finished first with a career-best 114.45 points, followed by Taylor Waggoner (100.5) and Marionette Lundberg (95.35).

“That was the turning point in the meet right there,” South coach Dennis Anderson said. “We were behind by six and never looked back after that.”

South’s young swimmers helped the team secure the win. Freshman Nicole Hinely, who already has a state-qualifying time in the 100-yard butterfly, skipped that event to try the 100 freestyle. She took first, finishing in 55.9 seconds — another state-qualifying time.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I’ve got my two events for state so far, and I hope to get more.”

Hinely also won the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 2.78 seconds, while sophomore Ashlee Becker won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.02.

“She dropped two seconds in her breaststroke,” Anderson said. “She’s knocking on the door for state.”

Sophomore Angela Pearson was the Wolves’ other individual winner when she finished the 500 freestyle in 5:31.55.

Pearson also won the event Tuesday at Shelton, but finished in 5:54.27. South won that meet, 114-71.

“I just told her to be aggressive and go out fast,” Anderson said. “She’s got the training behind her; she just needs to go out hard from the very beginning.”

Pearson said she needs to continue to develop her strokes, turns and underwater speed, but was happy to make some strides. “It felt really good to finally drop some time,” she said. “I just had to get my head together.”

The Wolves won one of the three relays when Becker and Hinely teamed with Johanna Steinbrink and Rachel Wester to capture the 200 freestyle in 1:46.92.

“I think every single girl had her best time,” Anderson said. “It was a great meet.”

South travels to Lincoln for its next meet, Tuesday, and then returns home Thursday against Olympia.

Both matches are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
