SK goes winless in final homestand

The game of baseball can be unforgiving and relentless, and the South Kitsap Wolves felt the full impact of its wrath in their final homestand of the year April 27.

The Wolves had managed some success in the previous two weeks after starting their season 0-7, picking up three wins in their next four games and going 1-2 the following week. That put their record at 4-11.

The club hasn’t won again since, dropping games to Bellarmine Prep and Sumner before the start of a grueling schedule of four home games in four days starting April 24.

Junior SK pitcher Payton Moritz started the week against Curtis with a complete game for the Wolves, giving up just one run and three hits on the mound. But the Wolves managed just three hits themselves, suffering another shutout loss 1-0.

The Wolves dropped the April 25 game against Olympia 23-2, with 14 of those runs coming in the top of the seventh. It took five SK pitchers to get three outs. Senior Nathan Ericson drove in the Wolves lone earned run of the game.

Games three and four fared no better for the Wolves, with Puyallup shutting out SK 8-0 April 26, and Rogers used a five-run first inning to pull away in an 11-1 blowout April 27. Moritz recorded the lone RBI from those two games.

The Wolves have now been shut out eight times, after being blanked just four times last year.

SK hopes to finish the season on a high note as it travels to Gig Harbor May 5.
