SK ends football season with blowout of Kentwood

South Kitsap football gave its fans something to cheer about Nov. 3 as the Wolves closed the year with a 41-6 win over the Kentwood Conquerors.

The Wolves have fallen on hard times the past few years, but started the season competitive, despite its 1-3 record. But then they hit a rough patch, averaging just 7.2 points over the next five games, while their opposition never failed to score less than 28 points.

But the Wolves turned it around in the last game of the season against the Conquerors, who came into the Thursday night contest with a 2-8 record.

The Wolves got their first break of the evening with seven minutes to go in the opening quarter after a fumbled handoff. The ball was recovered by Josaiah Asuega, and the turnover translated into points just two plays later on a 14-yard touchdown run from sophomore Boden Harvey.

Then, with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half, disaster struck for Kentwood again on a handoff. SK recovered the mad scramble for the ball.

The Wolves quickly capitalized with a 6-yard run into the end zone by junior Jordan Lee and a successful two-point conversion to end the first-half scoring.

Lee took over the game in the second half. After a 34-yard run by Brycen Clay on the opening play of the third quarter, Lee found the end zone again two plays later on a 14-yard sprint past the pylons.

After Kentwood’s opening drive ended in a blocked punt, Lee added another rushing TD, a 34-yarder to put the game at 26-0.

A bit of trickery helped Lee get involved with a fourth score in the game. On a 3rd and 14 inside the red zone with 11:20 left in the game, junior quarterback Jack Horton left his position under center and began walking toward his sideline and pointing to his hand. The motion left Lee alone in the backfield to take the shotgun snap and, to the surprise of all, throw a beautiful pass to junior wide receiver Braden Skovald in the back of the end zone.

A last-second score by the Conquerors kept the Wolves from a shutout.

SK finished the year with 2-8 record, finishing just above Rogers in the South Puget Sound League 4A standings.
