7 Kitsap County wrestlers win state titles

Kitsap County tallied seven state wrestling champions at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome over the weekend.

South Kitsap crowned three state champs, Bremerton two, and North Kitsap and Olympic each one.

South Kitsap

The Wolves were the most successful team in the county, scoring 130 points and finishing second on the boys side of the 4A division.

Every single wrestler placed at the Mat Classic, including Mitchell Neiner and Phillip Chobot, claiming gold medals.

Brennan Williams finished third at 113 pounds, as did Stone Hartford at 132. Gabriel Fragoso finished fourth at 170, Braden Shook fifth at 138, Chase Eaglin seventh at 145 and Logan Allinson eighth at 126 pounds.

The girls finished 20th out of 99 teams in their inaugural season. Monica Kaiser led the Wolves with a first-place finish at 145 pounds. Finishing with 1-2 records were: Taylor Abundis at 110, Larissa Barfknecht at 115 and Rosemary Brooks at 120 pounds.

Bremerton

The Knights finished ninth in the 2A division out of 56 teams with only three wrestlers, scoring 58.5 points.

Thor and Lars Michaelson completed their perfect season within the state, both going 4-0 and winning a state title at 170 and 182 pounds. Brennan Galloway’s tournament ended early after going 0-2.

Yzana Smith also went 0-2 at 190 pounds.

North Kitsap

The Vikings finished seventh with 75 points. Sofian Hammou captured his second Mat Classic title at 220 pounds after going 4-0 over the weekend. Ben Gomez finished fourth at 182, Jaxon Johnson fifth at 138 pounds and Zakaria Hammou seventh at 195 pounds. Jake Poggi and Morgan Scott Paul won a match, and Wyatt Trogden and Wyatt Sloman were winless.

Emily Gomez showcased her talents, going 3-2 and getting a fifth place at 140 pounds for the girls.

Olympic

Xion Horne and Miles Brown were unable to win at the Mat Classic for the Trojan boys.

However, Ali Templeton won the state title at 120 pounds and Gloria Hudson went 2-2 at 135 pounds for the girls.

Klahowya

Logan Wallis headlined the Eagles with a 2-2 finish at 160 pounds and claimed fourth place. Deacon Wintch won a match at 120 pounds. However, Carson Wintch, Reece Decourval, Kano Clare, Logan Weaver and Maryon Stewart all went 0-2 in their weight classes.

Klahowya’s Mya Young went 1-2 at 115 pounds.

Central Kitsap

The Cougars finished 46th in the 3A division with 14 points. Chris Cartagena had the best record, going 2-2 at 152 pounds. Quinn Lawrence and Cole Erickson went 1-2, and Carter Chadwick ended 0-2.

For the girls, Daytona Stoner and Deija Diego both went 3-3 and finished 8th at 110 and 120 pounds. Angel Cartagena went 0-2 at 105 pounds.

Bainbridge

No Bainbridge Spartan came home with a medal, finishing 55th out of 75 teams with eight points. Wyatt Chabot and Garrett Goade both finished with records of 1-2, while Garrett Goade fell to 0-2.

For the girls, Alexandra Morrison finished 1-2 in the 3A/4A 140 pounds division.

Kingston

Gavin Garner was the only Buccaneer to compete this year. He finished his season 1-2 at heavyweight, giving Kingston four points and finishing 37th.
