Poulsbo will host 2012 Babe Ruth World Series

POULSBO — Aug. 15-22, 2012, Poulsbo will be filled with fans of Babe Ruth baseball.

On April 14, Poulsbo was announced as the official host town of the 2012 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series. With the title of host, events associated with Babe Ruth baseball are planned here and families from the area will host athletes from around the country.

The host town will be the main focus, but other areas should expect to participate as well, said Kitsap World Series Executive Board co-host president Brent Stenman.

“There are obviously going to be a lot of people coming to town from all over,” Stenman said.

On May 18, a signing will be held in Poulsbo at a venue yet to be determined.

Ten teams will play in the week-long championship series here. Babe Ruth regulations  require  athletes  to  stay  with  host families in the area. It’s part of the Babe Ruth tradition, and host families play an important role for the families of traveling athletes, Stenman said.

Making it to the Babe Ruth World Series is a month-long process. Many families try to follow their athletes around, but expenses add up, Stenman said. Players’ families don’t have to worry about accommodations for their athletes.

Along with finding host families for the athletes, the executive board is charged with a list of other duties from the Babe Ruth League, including hosting a barbecue, a parade, coaches breakfast and a banquet for 800 people.

Stenman said his biggest focus is raising money for the hosting; the executive board is expected to raise $140,000. Currently, it has about $30,000.
