One-two punch: Klahowya welcomes talented tennis duo

Easter is Sunday, but for Bruce Pemberton it feels like Christmas.

Easter is Sunday, but for Bruce Pemberton it feels like Christmas.

The Klahowya girls tennis coach recently landed a dream gift in two-headed tennis monster Tracy Landram and Maggie Becker, both of whom became Lady Eagles prior to the season.

Landram, a freshman, is a United States Tennis Association (USTA)-ranked player. Becker, a junior, is a transfer from White River High School who last year advanced to the Class 3A state championships in singles action, winning two of her four matches. She is a two-time state participant.

Both Landram and Becker are 3-0 this season and neither has dropped a single game, going 36-0.

“It’s like Christmas for a coach,” Pemberton said following KSS’ 4-3 loss at Kingston Wednesday. “That’s what happens; it’s like Christmas.”

Landram currently holds the No. 1 singles slot, but Pemberton said the gap between the two is closing. They played a “challenge” match Monday — the winner earning the No. 1 singles position — and Landram came back after trailing 5-1 in the first set to win 7-5, 6-3.

“They are vicious,” Pemberton said. “Their challenge matches are getting closer and closer.”

Pemberton said Landram and Becker are so good, so beyond their age, not even the coaches can hit with them. Instead, they challenge each other.

“The only one who can hit with Tracy is Maggie,” Pemberton said. “Those two gals can hit together, it’s so competitive.”

Landram, who regularly plays USTA tournaments on the weekends, beat Kingston’s Leigh Anne Undang 6-0, 6-0 Wednesday and North Mason’s Jessica Zevnick 6-0, 6-0 Wednesday.

“When you have a player like that show up, it raises the level of the entire program,” Pemberton said. “She encourages her teammates, which is very rare, especially as a freshman.”

Perhaps as impressive as her skill, Pemberton said Lambert is a true team player. Wednesday, she was one of the few KSS players watching the tail end of the Kingston match, cheering on her teammates in cold weather hours after her own match had ended.

“The leadership qualities — she’s like Hannah Montana; she’s this USTA-ranked player, but she’s still a freshman,” Pemberton said. “I see her in the hall laughing and giggling and I forget that she’s a kid because when she’s on the court it’s all business. You just sit there with your jaw hanging open because she’s that good.”

There’s been a trickle down effect in the Lady Eagle lineup with Landram and Becker on the team because every player was bumped down two spots from where they would have been had the duo not joined the team.

“It forces everybody to play down a little bit, so you’re gaining experience,” Pemberton said. “Instead of being thrown into matches against really good players, they play down a little bit.”

Marissa Gray, who Pemberton said could be a No. 1, is currently the No. 3 singles player. She beat Kingston’s Kristi Mellum 6-1, 6-0 Wednesday.

“She’s playing great at No. 3,” Pemberton said. “She’s getting valuable experience and she’s winning matches, which is great for her confidence.”

Katy Seal and Nina Frando are KSS’ No. 1 doubles tandem. They won 6-1, 6-4 against North Mason, but lost 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 against Kingston.

Nicole Lewandowski, who teamed with Kiera Parker at No. 2 doubles in a 6-1, 6-4 win against North Mason, is the team’s lone four-year player.

The Lady Eagles (1-2) hosted Sequim yesterday, but results from that match were unavailable at press time. The team hosts Bremerton at 4 p.m today.
