Olympic girls nearly spoil Roughriders’ division chase

Port Angeles moves on to face North Kitsap after holding off the Trojans

PORT ANGELES — Olympic High School was on the losing end of a close matchup against the Roughriders on Feb. 1, as the Trojans could not capitalize on late chances to take back the lead in the final quarter.

With the 34-26 win at home, Port Angeles now shares the Olympic League 2A division title with North Kitsap, which also won Feb. 1.

The Roughriders and Olympic missed shots all night in a physical, defensive contest. The fourth quarter was no different.

Junior guard Zoie Matheny gave her team hope by sinking a 3-pointer and pulling the Trojans within one point. Olympic, however, finished the final period by making one shot in nine attempts. This combined with four missed shots at the end of the third quarter propelled Port Angeles to victory. That triple was Matheny’s lone basket on the night. Junior guard Allanah Mitchell led her team with seven points.

North Kitsap and the Roughriders are scheduled to compete for the league title, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. Feb. 3 at Kingston High School.
