NORTH KITSAP — More than a dozen sports teams at North Kitsap and Kingston High schools kicked off their spring season this week, with mixed results.

North Kitsap’s soccer squad started the season off on the right foot, beating Chimacum 6-0 Saturday and Gig Harbor 3-2 Monday. But the Vikings stumbled Wednesday in a 4-1 loss at Nathan Hale.

“We came up short,” said NK soccer coach Chris May after Wednesday’s loss. “We’ll have to get back on track for Saturday at (Central Kitsap).”

The Viking baseball team began the season with a 7-3 loss at Chimacum, but rebounded Wednesday for a 4-1 victory over Central Kitsap. Sophomore Alex Smith got the win while his brother, Andy, was credited with the save. Nick Benish helped lift the Vikings with a two-run homer in the fifth.

“In general, our team was a lot more prepared than we were on Monday,” said NK baseball coach Jeff Weible. “It was a good turnaround.”

The Buccaneer soccer team, trying to rebuild after losing six of last year’s starters and their 12th man, began the season with a 6-0 loss to Bainbridge Tuesday.

“We’ll use it,” head coach Craig Smith said of the humbling experience. “I think we’ll be competitive within the 2A division.”

Kingston’s baseball team started the season with a 13-3 loss to Bellarmine March 13, but bounced back the next day, beating Roosevelt 12-2 and Ballard 7-4 in three-inning games at a jamboree in Seattle. They were rained out of a game at Shelton Wednesday.

North Kitsap fastpitch was rained out at home Monday, but the Vikings took on and beat Foss, 3-2, Tuesday to start the season. Jenneke Oostman pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the win.

The Kingston girls fastpitch team will host Port Townsend today at 4 p.m. in its season opener.

In tennis, the Bucs lost a Tuesday match to Bainbridge, 6-1. Kingston’s one victory was earned by Theresa Tucci, who defeated Colleen Gruber 4-2, 4-0.

North and Kingston were set to match up for a few games Thursday at Kingston. Results were not available at press time.

North has a couple new additions to spring sports this year, as the boys and girls lacrosse teams join the mix. The girls traveled to Burien to take on Kennedy Tuesday, but lost 11-7, despite six goals from Mallory Glebe.

Kingston golf started this week as well, with the Bucs taking on Port Angeles. The boys results were: PA 35, KHS 21. In the girls round, KHS tied PA 79-79.

In the starting blocks Thursday were the Kingston and NK track teams, both competing at the Port Angeles Invitational. The Viking golfers were set to tee off Thursday as well. Results were not available at press time. Visit www.northkitsapherald.com for updates on teams that played Thursday.
