foursome, Oly’s Hike get taste of state tennis.
PASCO — The Central Kitsap Cougars may not have sent many to the 4A WIAA State Track & Field Championships last weekend.
But those who did go made the most of their time at Edgar Brown Stadium.
CK’s Shane Moskowitz represented the Cougars well, taking fourth place in the boys 1,600-meter race with a time of 4 minutes, 18.03 seconds, adding a seventh-place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 9:23.08.
Gig Harbor’s Miles Unterreiner, bound for Stanford University, won both events a week after Moskowitz nearly upset him at districts.
CK’s only other male competitor, high jumper Robbin Harris, joined Moskowitz on the podium, taking eighth place in the high jump with a 6-foot-4-inch leap.
Despite having just two athletes, the CK boys team scored eight team points, good for a 29th-place tie amongst the 50 scoring schools.
On the girls side, Allie Rue followed suit for CK. After finishing fourth in the 400 prelims with a time of 57.35, Rue improved her time to 57.29 in the finals, good for sixth place.
Rue was also a part of the girls 1,600 relay, running along side Sam Sudy, Shannon Moskowitz and Kate Berni, that finished sixth with a time of 3:59.47.
The girls scored a total of six team points, landing them in a tie for 27th place out of 43 scoring schools.
For the Trojans, also in Pasco for the 3A state meet, Samantha Brewer, the lone female Trojan competing, finished 13th in the long jump, leaping 15-6.
Nic Porter and John Wojtech represented Oly’s boys, as the distance runners finished 15th and 16th respectively in the 3,200. Porter ran the race in 9:57.67 while Wojtech ran a 10:20.4.
At the 2A state meet, held at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma, Klahowya’s lone boys participant, Randy Schmittler, finished eighth in the discus, with his toss of 139-05 landing him a podium spot.
The Eagles’ girls 1,600 relay, featuring Jes Cantu, Sharon Cox, Sierra Cook and Rebecca Lindgren, finished with a time of 4:11.99, finishing 10th in just missing the finals.
Tennis
Klahowya No. 1 singles competitor Shelby Hunter lost a very close first-round match to Blaine’s Veronica Rooney, 6-3, 7-6, before Mark Morris’ Laura Mahon ended Hunter’s run with a 6-1, 7-5 win.
Jessica Wilson too dropped back-to-back narrow matches, falling 6-1, 7-6 to Pullman’s Ashley Beitz in the first round before bowing out 6-4, 6-1 against Mari Pace of Black Hills.
On the doubles side, Misty Noster and Katie Stephens fell in a first-round battle 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Roni Hewett and Len Miraglio of Clarkston. Then Mark Morris’ Megan Boaglio and Lauren Salberg ended their run with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Olympic’s Justin Hike was the lone Trojan left standing, advancing to state for the first time himself. He won his opening match 6-1, 6-3 against Shorecrest’s Ricardo Celis before falling 6-1, 6-3 to Olympic League rival and eventual state runner-up Lance Wilhelm of Peninsula. In consolation, Hike fell to Kamiakin’s Josh Thorton in 6-2 straight sets. Just a junior however, Hike will return to the Trojans next season.
