Klahowya soccer cruises through 1st round at state

The Klahowya Eagles easily defeated Connell 8-0 Nov. 8 in the first round of the state soccer playoffs.

The No. 1 seeded Eagles scored three goals within the first 15 minutes of the game.

Shortly after, captain Amira Lyons looked to expand the lead with a breakaway shot. However, it went over the crossbar and through the uprights to keep it 3-0. Halfway through the first half, Connell had its first opportunity on Klahowya’s side of the field.

The Connell Eagles earned a corner kick that went straight out of bounds for a goal kick. Afterward, the two teams battled in Connell’s zone for nearly 10 minutes before Lyons struck gold in the second minute.

Klahowya’s Ali Divano added the fifth goal of the game in the first 45 seconds of the second half on a breakaway through ball.

Soon after, Raven Stoner picked off a Connell goal kick. Stoner nutmegged a defender and scored from the 6-yard box to make it 6-0. Victoria Peters scored five minutes later when Connell’s goalie tipped the ball off her gloves on a corner kick.

The Eagles struck one final time in the final few minutes when Divano drew a penalty after juking several defenders. Instead of taking the penalty kick herself, goalie Ella Bottalico ran down the field to take the shot.

Botallico fired the ball past Connell’s goalie to cap off the victory.
