It’s been 10 years since Klahowya brought home its first and only girls soccer state title.

In terms of talent, the 2009 squad could be the best coach Troy Oelschlager has seen since the 1999 championship season.

“Things are looking pretty good,” said Oelschlager, who enters his 13th season. “We’ve got some talent and experience.”

The Lady Eagles return nearly every key piece from a 2008 team that reached the district tournament, where it lost by a goal to Steilacoom. Seniors Courtney Lewandowski, Rebekka Schell and Jessica Drake are back along with leading scorer Jordan Dixon, a junior who had scored five of the team’s seven goals through Wednesday (results from yesterday’s game against Sequim were unavailable at press time).

“She just has a knack for being in the right place at the right time,” Oelschlager said.

The team generated more than 30 shots combined in the first three games, yet capitalized on less than 25 percent of them.

“She’s bailed us out,” Oelschlager said of Dixon. “The biggest surprise is we’re getting a lot of shots … but we’re not scoring.”

While the Lady Eagles had combined to outscore their opponents 7-1 through Wednesday, Oelschlager said the defense could be stronger. He shifted junior Rocki Winkler from midfield to defender and made defense an area of emphasis in practice. Winkler joins Drake, a co-captain, and sophomores Rachel Lindgren and Carly Whetsel on defense.

“We’ve been a little shaky back there,” Oelschlager said.

KSS is spreading the ball around evenly. Lewandowski recored two assists in the North Mason game and Brittany Robinson and Katlyn Sargent have created opportunities as well.

“It’s been a real mix,” Oelschlager said of the passing.
