Two defensive miscues doomed the Klahowya girls soccer team in a 2-1 season-ending loss to Lakewood in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament Tuesday at Silverdale Stadium.

The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead into halftime — Ruthie Hawley put the team ahead with a tip-in off a corner kick in the 24th minute — but Lakewood took advantage of two mistakes to score twice in the second half.

“A couple mistakes in the back and it cost us, unfortunately,” KSS coach Troy Oelschlager said. “You just can’t do that.”

The first slip-up came in the 53rd minute when Lakewood’s Morgan Rettig split defenders to volley a shot off KSS goalkeeper Cassandra Dick, who appeared to be caught off-guard.

With the score tied 1-1, Lakewood converted again in what proved to be a game-deciding goal in the 68th minute. Freshman midfielder Abby Burke headed in a jump ball after a deflection off a free kick from 30 yards out.

On the kick, a KSS defender headed the ball straight up, giving Burke a chance to put a head on it.

“They are a solid team,” Oelschlager said. “They’ve been battle-tested.”

KSS graduates three seniors, but the majority of the squad returns in 2010. The Lady Eagles were the No. 1 seed and would have played another home game had they won Tuesday.

“We’ll be back,” Oelschlager said.
