Kitsap wrestlers head to Mat Classic

Kitsap County high school wrestling teams will send several wrestlers to state at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome, including seven regional champions.

Bainbridge

The Spartans had two champions at the 3A Region 3 tournament—Wyatt Chabot at 157 pounds and Garrett Goade at 175 pounds. Chabot finished 3-0 with a 13-5 major decision, third-period pin and 4-2 decision in the finals. Goade also finished 3-0 with a first-period pin, and 8-4 and 15-13 victories. The Spartans finished 13th as a team with 55 points.

The Bainbridge girls competed at the 3A/4A Region 2 tournament. Natalie Noel finished second at 115 pounds. Noel pinned her first opponent and won 7-0 in the semifinals. However, she was pinned in the first minute in the championship match.

North Kitsap

The Vikings finished third in the team standings with 117 points at the 2A Region 2 tournament.

Dayton Heymann entered as the top seed at 138 pounds but fell to third place. He won his first match 6-2 and lost afterward. Heymann bounced back with 8-0 and 5-4 victories. Jaxon Johnson finished fourth at 144 pounds with a 2-2 record. Johnson won by injury default to claim fourth place and a state berth.

Ben Gomez finished second and Morgan Paul finished fourth at 175 pounds. Gomez pinned his first two opponents before falling 7-1 in the championship bout. Paul also earned two pins but lost 7-2 and 4-1 in his other matches. Zakaria Hammou finished second at 215 pounds. He won his first two matches by pin, but lost 6-3 in the finals.

Kingston

Kingston’s Gavin Garner was the only Buccaneer to compete for the boys. He went 2-2 and finished fifth at 285 pounds. Hannah Weaver was the only girl who competed, finishing fourth at 125 pounds. Her two wins came by pin and a 4-1 victory.

South Kitsap

South Kitsap’s boys finished fourth as a team in the 4A Region 3 tournament with 113.5 points. Dylan Sternod and Stone Hartford were the two Wolves to capture titles. Sternod went 3-0 at 106 pounds, winning by tech fall, a first-period pin and an 8-7 decision.

Hartford dominated at 144 pounds, pinning all his opponents, including a late third-period pin.

Hayden Sternod finished third at 113 pounds with a 3-1 record. Brennan Williams finished second at 126 pounds with a 2-1 record, including a pin and 13-3 decision.

Braden Shook finished third at 150 pounds with a 3-1 record. Shook earned a pin, decision and tech fall victory. Chase Eaglin medically forfeited the third-place match and finished fourth at 157 pounds.

The SK girls competed at the 3A/4A Region 3 tournament. Rosemary Brooks finished second at 125 pounds with a 2-1 record. Brooks won her first two matches 7-0 and 8-0 but lost the finale 10-1.

Olympic

Olympic finished fourth with 89 points. Mason Mangolna was the first Trojan to qualify for state, finishing fourth at 126 pounds. Mangolna earned two pins during the day but lost two matches by pin and a 9-3 decision.

Miles Brown finished fourth at 157 pounds. Brown also earned two pins but lost two decision matches, 8-4 and 3-0. Alexander Bullman lost his first match. However, he bounced back and finished fourth at 215 pounds. Bullman won his two matches 7-1 and 3-2 in a tiebreaker.

Kevin Hudson won at 285 pounds with a 3-0 record. He handled some familiar foes, pinning Garner and taking a forfeit victory against teammate DeQuan Freeland in the finals. Freeland finished second with a 2-1 record.

Central Kitsap

Central Kitsap’s boys finished ninth at the 3A Region 1 tournament with 94.5 points. Nathan Cronin finished second at 106 pounds with a 3-1 record. Cronin won his first three matches with two pins and a 10-7 decision but lost in the finals by pin.

Carter Chadwick went 3-1 and finished third at 138 pounds. Chadwick picked up two pins and a tech fall. Wyatt Harper finished fourth at 150 pounds with a 4-2 record. After losing in the second round, Harper rallied for three straight wins to reach the third-place match. However, he fell 2-1.

Keahi Bonsell went 2-2 and finished fourth at 157 pounds. Bonsell found himself in two close matches to end the tournament, winning 2-0 to reach the third-place match and losing 7-5 in sudden victory for fourth.

Brayden Turano finished 3-1 and earned third at 165 pounds. After losing in the semifinals, Turnao picked up an injury forfeit and won the final match 4-2.

The CK girls competed at the 3A/4A Region 3 tournament. Deija Diego finished third at 125 pounds with a 5-1 record. Diego lost her second match and picked up four wins in a row afterward, including two pins.

Bremerton

Bremerton finished 10th as a team with 44 points. Anthony Murphy finished fourth with a 2-2 record at 120 pounds. Murphy won his first match by pin but fell in consolations afterward. He won his third match 10-1 and lost the third-place match 10-1.

Lars Michaelson dominated at 190 pounds, winning with a 3-0 record. He won with a first-period pin and two technical falls.

Klahowya

Klahowya finished fourth as a team in the 1A Region 1 tournament with 112 points. Carson Winttch won at 120 pounds with two pins and a 12-9 decision in the finals. Deacon Wintch finished third at 126 pounds. Winch was pinned in the semis but responded with a pair of pins.

Bishop Bessler finished second at 138 pounds. Bessler battled all day, winning 8-3 and 3-1. He lost the finals 5-1. Reece DeCourval finished third at 144 pounds with three pins all in the second period. Sean Price finished second at 150 pounds. Price won his first two matches by pin but lost the championship match 14-11.

Klahowya’s girls competed at the 1B/2B/1A/2A Region 1 tournament. Cheyanne Wolfard-Henry finished fourth at 135 pounds with a 2-2 record. Wolfard-Henry battled for her wins, claiming 4-1 and 7-4 decisions. However, she lost by a first-period pin in the third-place match.
