KHS football coach resigns just weeks before the season

Kingston High School football coach Ethan Goldizen recently resigned, athletic director Ed Call confirmed, leaving the school without a coach just weeks before the season begins.

Goldizen, who has coached the Buccanneers the last two seasons, is leaving to take a teaching position with the Peninsula School District. KHS went 2-8 in each of Goldizen’s two seasons.

Call noted the departure of Goldizen puts the team in a tough position.

“I’m sorry to lose him, but happy for him getting back into the classroom full time,” Call said in an emailed statement. “I’m sure he’ll pick up coaching again soon.”

Goldizen said he decided to leave Kingston because he was closing in on a full-time teaching job, as he was only a substitute teacher in Kitsap County. He said the Kingston program deserves someone who can dedicate the full time and energy into purely coaching, and with his new teaching job, Goldizen felt that he couldn’t accomplish that.

“It had nothing to do with the kids,” Goldizen said. “It had nothing to do with anything other than me trying to find a real job.”

With the season on the horizon, Goldizen left behind a transition plan for the assistant coaches, adding there is a “little blueprint” in place for the first game of the season when the Buccaneers will be taking on Foss at Mount Tahoma High School Sept 7.

“I think once they establish those core fundamentals, you know, at a high level… I won’t be surprised at that (team) winning games,” Goldizen said.
