GIRLS SOCCER | Scoring distribution continues to power Wolves

Five different players produce goals in South Kitsap’s 6-0 win against Stadium

South Kitsap features a talent-laden group of seniors.

But the depth in Wolves’ girls soccer program extends beyond that as they again displayed Tuesday night in a 6-0 win against Stadium in a Class 4A Narrows League match.

Junior midfielder Kayleanna Quichocho scored a team-high two goals, while the others were produced by four different players. That followed a trend. During its 5-1 win Sept. 23 against Bellarmine Prep, four South players produced goals.

“We’re spreading the goals around and we’re attacking from all over,” Cain said. “We have so many girls that can score.”

Even when they are not at full strength. Cain held senior forward Rachael Prince, who has an undisclosed injury but is expected to play Thursday at Gig Harbor, out.

Senior midfielder Hayley Romo, who produced a goal in the 25th minute, has a theory behind the Wolves’ offensive success.

“We have a really great bond with this group,” she said. “We all play with each other.”

While South does not feature one prolific scorer, Cain believes they can sustain success through their scoring distribution.

“That’s really who we’re trying to be,” Cain said. “It’s really working well. We’re getting numbers in, we’re defending high. I was really pleased.”

She also believes the Wolves have done a good job of dictating “tempo” in their matches.

“I’m just really pleased with how we’re playing,” Cain said. “We’re calm, but we’re intense. We’re possessing it well, we’re not getting flustered and we’re moving the ball extremely well right now.”

South never has won a regular-season Narrows League title — it captured a Bridge Division championship in 2006 — but remained in first place after defeating the Tigers (1-4-1 overall, 1-3-0 league). Romo said she is not concerned about the Wolves (4-1-0, 4-0-0) relaxing, though.

“Coach Cain always keeps the practices intense,” she said. “We never let up.”

Cain said that is not much of an issue.

“It’s probably the most consistent team I’ve ever coached,” she said. “They’re bringing it. I don’t have to say much for them to get up.”

After all, Cain said there is no shortage of motivation within a program that has not advanced to state since 2011.

“If you win the Narrows League, you get an automatic berth to state — and it’s not easy to win the Narrows League,” she said. “We’re motivated.”
