FOOTBALL | Wolves fight until the end on Senior Night

South fell 38-13 to Timberline Oct. 10, but the players and fans never let down.

Even with the South Kitsap’s starting quarterback, Jake Taylor, and running back, Izaiah Davis, out with concussions, the Wolves never let down. Even the fans, dressed in costumes of all sorts, remained in the rain cheering on their team through the fight.

On a night celebrating the seniors of the South Kitsap football team, cheer team and band, the Wolves lost 38-13 to Timberline Oct. 30.

Cole Craner started at quarterback as the night got underway.

After three and out by the Wolves on the first possession of the game, the Blazers started at the Wolves 45-yard line.

Timberline’s Anthony Hathaway made his way up the field for an 11-yard gain and first down. On the next play, Chris Barnes ran for 29-yards to put the Blazers up 7-0 with 9:55 to play in the first quarter.

Barnes scored again for a 63-yard play as he caught a long pass from Blazers’ quarterback Austin Whalen He easily ran the ball in to the end zone, making the score 14-0 with 6:59 in the quarter.

The Blazers are big fans of keeping the ball on the ground, and constantly kicked off with strange bouncers.

Craner broke through Timberline’s defense and ran 45-yards for a first down Wolves. With a hop pass over the defense, Craner completed to Izaijha Byrd for a six-yard play, putting the Wolves in field-goal range.

An off sides call on the defense put the Wolves on the four-yard line. After several attempted hand-offs that resulted in the Wolves constant slipping on the turf, Craner kept the ball and made it in to the end zone, and off went the cannon.

Unfortunately, the extra point was no good, but the Wolves got on the board, and it was 14-6 with 5:07 to play.

The next punt return put the Blazers in South’s defensive end. Instead of punting on the fourth down, Timberline went for it, and completed a 28-yard pass for a first down. However, after strong defense by the Wolves, Timberline had to settle for a field goal.

Timberline’s Eli Allen caught another 35-yard throw from Whalen putting the Blazers on the Wolves 32-yard line. Uli MaAe scored a 22-yard run to end the quarter 24-6.

The second quarter started with a quick interception by the Blazers, putting Timberline in a great offensive position. Several big stops by the Wolves’ Jagher Beresheim and Byrd forced the Blazers to turn the ball over on downs.

Craner ran the ball up the sideline for a first down before being unfairly taken down by the Blazers’ defense. A horse collar flag pushed the Wolves up to timberline’s 40-yard line.

Craner showed off is arm, throwing the ball far down the field, however, there was a little too much on the pass as the ball sailed just slightly over the receivers head.

The Blazers worked their way down the field as Whalen completed a 26-yard pass to Barnes. A fake field goal set up resulted in a touchdown by Jared Bush. With the extra point, the Blazers went up 31-6 with 4:43 left in the half.

JJ Leota and Jacob Lewis made a few big defensive plays to keep the score 31-6 going in to half time.

With the kick off to start the second half, Eli Wattree came up with the tackle for the Blazers to start on the 27-yard line.

Timberline worked their way up the field as Anthony Hathaway swept around the back to gain a first down. Anthony Killingsworth made a big play, tackling Whalen as he tried to sneak through the defense.

The Blazers tried to throw a long ball but Jesse Strutz was there to break up the play. Even Eli Allen, the intended receiver for the Blazers, high-fived Strutz on his effort.

Whalen went for the same play again, but this time South was successful and Byrd intercepted the pass for a Wolves’ first down.

Craner continued to show of his speed as he kept the ball, moving it up the field to the 20-yard line.

On the next play, Craner handed the ball off to Michael Garcia who tore up the left side of the field. With great blocks by his receivers, Garcia was able to run in to the end zone for an 80-yard touchdown, and the stands went wild.

With 7:46 left in the third quarter, the score was 31-13.

Timberline was quick to answer as Whalen tossed a small pass to MaAe, who ran the ball to the corner and got it across the line for a touchdown Blazers, making the score 38-13.

Although the scoring came to an end, the Wolves never let down. The defense doubled the pressure and caused Timberline to punt for the first time in the fourth quarter.

JJ Leota and Nathan Marin made several incredible stops, including a big play where Leota had to track down the quarterback after Whalen scrambled up the field.

Eli Wattree stacked up several tackles for loss, including two big sacks that pushed the Blazers back to third and long.

Jesse Strutz came up with the second interception of the night as he read a 29-yard pass perfectly.

On offense, Craner took hit after hit and continued to show off his speed and arm strength as he looked for his receivers.

Both on and off the field, the Wolves fought until the end. Although this was South’s last league game, the Wolves face Mount Tahoma 5 p.m. Nov. 6 at Kitsap Bank Stadium for a crossover game.
