Dozens of Kitsap wrestlers qualify for state

The North Kitsap Vikings won their first sub-regional wrestling tournament under coach Robert Gomez with 366 points Feb. 4.

Olympic finished second with 206, Bremerton fourth with 166 and Kingston seventh with 42.

The Vikings led the pack with 15 state-qualifying wrestlers. Wyatt Trogden scored the most team points for the Vikings with 28 after placing first at 126 pounds. Jaxon Johnson scored 27 points and finished first at 138 pounds, and Sofian Hammou scored 26 points with a first-place finish at 220 pounds.

Wyatt Sloman, Jake Poggi and Zakaria Hammou also finished first for the Vikings at 132, 160 and 195 pounds. Dayton Heymann, Morgan Paul and Ben Gomez finished second at 138, 170 and 182. Kia Espiritu and Josue May each captured a bronze medal at 126 and 152 pounds.

Olympic’s Xion Horne and Kevin Hudson were the Trojans two first-place winners at 113 and 285 pounds. Mason Manglona and Miles Brown each finished second at 120 and 160 pounds while Daniel Rosales and DeQuan Freeland both finished third at 145 and 285 pounds.

Bremerton’s Thor and Lars Michaelson won gold medals at 170 and 182 pounds. Brennan Galloway finished second at 152 pounds and Gabriel Riddle, Matthew Chichester and David Andrews all finished third at 120, 138 and 220 pounds.

Kingston’s had three wrestlers place in the heavyweight classes. Jefferson Hernandez scored 22 team points after finishing second at 195 pounds. Joshua Arnim finished third in the same division. Gavin Garner earned 20 points with a second-place finish at 285 pounds.

The rest of the Kitsap County teams competed in other tournaments.

Bainbridge finished seventh at the North Puget Sound League 3A sub-regional tournament. Garrett and Wyatt Goade were champions at 170 and 220 pounds. Wyatt Chabot placed second for the Spartans.

Klahowya finished second at the Nisqually League 1A tournament. Eagles’ Carson Wintch won at 113 pounds, Deacon Wintch won at 120, Kano Clare won at 138, Logan Wallis won at 160 and Maryon Stewart won at 220 pounds. Reece Decourval and Logan Weaver captured silver medals at 132 and 152 pounds.

South Kitsap finished second at the South Puget Sound League 4A tournament with 286 points, Sumner won with 309.5. Mitchell Neiner headlined the Wolves with a dominating first-place finish at 138 pounds.

In addition, Brennen Williams won at 113, Stone Hartford won at 132, Gabriel Fragoso won at 170 and Phillip Chobot won at 182 pounds.

Central Kitsap rounded the boys tournaments by placing fourth at the South Sound Conference 3A sub-regional tournament. Quinn Lawrence was the only Cougar to capture gold, winning at 132 pounds. Nate Cronin, Carter Chadwick and Chris Cartagena all placed second at 106, 132 and 152 pounds.

The Kitsap girls competed in their sub-regional tournaments, too. Central Kitsap’s Daytona Stoner won at 110 pounds. South Kitsap’s Larissa Barfknecht won at 115 pounds while teammates Rosemary Brooks and Monica Kaiser won at 120 and at 145 pounds.

Olympic’s Ali Templeton won at 120 pounds, Bainbridge’s Alexandra Morrison won at 130 pounds and Bremerton’s Yzanah Smith won at 190 pounds.
