Degarimore claims 2 state titles, leads SK girls to 3rd-place finish

Mount Tahoma High School is the home of heartbreak no longer for South Kitsap senior thrower Grace Degarimore, who capped her track and field career with a pair of state championships in the javelin and discus and a runner-up finish in the shot put.

The top step of the awards podium had impossibly eluded Degarimore in last year’s meet after a personal best discus throw of 141 feet, 9 inches was bested on the final throw by a competitor.

Perhaps it was fitting then that her first-ever state crown would be captured in that very same discus ring May 23. The clear favorite in the event, Degarimore ensured no such heartbreak would occur this time with a first throw and personal best of 161 feet and 4 inches.

No other 4A female athlete came close to that mark. Those who stuck around to see her work, wondering just how far she could throw, got their money’s worth on a final toss of 164 feet and 8 inches. “It was my last throw, me competing against myself and with nothing to lose. I did what I came here to do, so just being myself, I put all my effort into it,” she said.

Her weekend took another step forward in the May 24 javelin event in which she found herself struggling initially. She and senior teammate Rylee Filbert scraped their way to the finals, where Degarimore made what she later called game-changing adjustments. “I was a little stressed and not focusing on my form. Then my coach told me to lower my angle because of the wind. That tiny little adjustment was able to bring it so much further.”

She capitalized on her coach’s advice, tossing a personal best of 136 feet, 3 inches in her second finals attempt. Those three inches made it just enough for her second state title of the meet.

Degarimore’s impressive weekend ended with a second-place finish in the shot put, her best throw flying 42 feet, 10 ¾ inches. While not enough to sweep the throwing events, the Utah Valley commit was more than thankful to have finally claimed the ultimate prize of a state title, let alone two. “It’s been so much fun. The coaches and my family, this kind of community I’m in, they’re all so supportive of each other. I’m lucky to be in that environment with people wanting me to do well,” she said.

Degarimore’s 28 points made up the majority of the Lady Wolves’ total of 43, enough to finish in third place among 4A teams at the state meet.

Filbert’s throw of 117 feet, 10 inches was good enough for eighth place in javelin to round out the field event points.

The girls also gained some points on the track. Junior Cheyanne Barker finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.7 seconds. Junior Lauren Laws took home two medals, setting a personal best of 4:58.45 for fourth in the 1600-meter run and taking fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.15.

Sophomore Isaac Benjamin’s performance in the 3200-meter run put the boys on the board. He claimed third place in the race with a time of 9:13.97.
